Pet Friendly Hotels in New Orleans French Quarter

A family vacation isn’t complete without the entire family, regardless of how many legs they have. Who said your pets didn’t want to celebrate Mardi Gras New Orleans too?

Mardi Gras New Orleans

A tradition since 1699, the New Orleans Mardi Gras celebration is one of the largest southern traditions in America. It was unofficially celebrated for about 130 years before a wealthy plantation owner named Bernard Xavier created a fundraiser to throw an official bash.

This sparked locals to up the ante of the festival. In 1856, a formal parade was introduced and ten years later Louisiana made Mardi Gras a legal state holiday. Mardi Gras is an annual event celebrated between February 3rd and March 9th of every year.

The festivities start in uptown New Orleans and end on Canal Street or in the French Quarter. Canal Street has been deemed as New Orleans’ Main Street.

It was originally named because of plans for a canal to run along the street. These plans never came to light yet the name still stands. The French Quarter is the historic part of New Orleans. With French architecture lining the streets and close proximity to jazz bars and landmarks, it is a popular place for tourists to stay.

Omni Royal Orleans Hotel

621 St. Louis Street, French Quarter (Vieux Carré)

About The Hotel

If walls could talk, the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel would be able to tell an epic tale. The building was first used as a sand floor café and hotel that housed auctions of stocks and real estate.

It is believed that the famous creole gumbo soup was invented by a Spaniard working in the café. In 1841, a fire destroyed most of the hotel and it was rebuilt to host banquets and balls during the Civil War.

At the persuading hands of union warships, the luxurious banquet halls were turned into a military hospital. Shortly after the building seemed to turn into a hot potato, gaining and losing almost ten new owners.

Eventually its decay began to become a tourist attraction in itself. Tourists visited the historic site for twenty-five cents until the 1915 hurricane officially brought the hotel to the ground. It took the end of World War II and several more years before the hotel was rebuilt and gained its notoriety.

Guests can enjoy private terraces, an outdoor pool and a meal at the hotel’s restaurant. There is also private parking available.

About The Hotel

The Rathbone Mansions offer guest their choice between two fully restored historic New Orleans’ mansions.

Distinguished by their addresses, the 1244 Esplanade Avenue mansion was constructed in 1846 by a wealthy man named Adolph Gauche. The mansion was built for his mistress, Elizabeth Aubert who was one of the first free women of color to own a home in New Orleans.
